A Brief History of Arrant-Light Oy
The story of Arrant-Light Oy began in Turku, in 1984 as a supplier of long-life fluorescent tubes and bulbs. Mr. Tarmo Mäkinen established the company and together with his wife Eeva started to run it. His knowledge and long experience in managing wholesale and electrical installation companies led him to start his own business.
Later in the decade the company, backed by the expertise of professional staff, began offering a group replacement service for large companies and industries, and the selection started to widen. Signal & special lamps for the industry became popular.
In the 1990s, Arrant-Light Oy shifted its focus to supplying lighting components to luminaire manufacturers, and the product selection broadened even more. Electronic ballasts, transformers, lamp holders, reflectors, and other lighting components were added to the selection.
In the beginning of 2000s, the company started to expand, and the LED revolution started. Arrant-Light Oy was the first company in Northern Europe to bring the game-changing white COB LEDs into their selection. A new bigger premises was acquired for the company’s office and warehouse. The first SMD LED modules were manufactured, which marked the birth of the aLED brand.
In 2008 generational change took place within the company when the founder’s son Janne Mäkinen stepped into the CEO position.
The past years of growth led to even bigger projects in both industry and design in the 2010s. The aim was not only selling but also consulting in different fields of lighting. The Olympic torch monument of 2014 was illuminated with Arrant-Light’s help, thousands of designer streetlights were exchanged in Copenhagen, and millions of shop lights use Arrant-Light’s components to this day. aLED selection grew significantly and aLED AURA+ LED Driver series was introduced to the market.
GROWLIGHTENGINE® greenhouse luminaire brand was developed together with LED specialists and professional growers. Its patented spectrum started illuminating all kinds of greenery all around the world.
2020 brought challenges globally to the business. Despite that, in the past few years, a lot has happened. Lightshop.fi consumer web store opened to reduce excess stock left from the projects and is now delivering daily globally. Lighting projects these days need more customizing and innovative solutions than before. Last year eevatec, a unique technology that allows to design extremely high-temperature enduring LED products, was launched to the public.
Today millions of Arrant-Light Oy’s components and products are found all around the world and are often used as solutions in many special and demanding applications.
Thanks to systematic growth and specialization in the field, we are now celebrating our 40th anniversary as one of the leading lighting component supplier in the Northern Europe and the Nordic market leader in white COB LEDs. Northern Europe’s top ten leading lighting manufacturers use our components and services.
From the beginning to this day, our core values have been long-lasting products, high efficiency, and compact product sizes to minimize waste. Environmental thinking has been a crucial driver of our business from the very beginning.
